Jail for Detroit Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick
August 7, 2008
It
is difficult to find the right words to describe the almost
indescribable: Kwame Kilpatrick, indicted Mayor of the City of
Detroit, out on bail, restricted in his travels while on bond,
decided that he would take a little trip out of the country without
getting the court's approval: And now he's going to have to suffer
the cruelest of treatment for a Democrat politician: He's going to
be treated like any ordinary citizen. He's
going to jail, courtesy of Wayne County, Detroit Judge Ronald
Giles. (More

Kilpatrick has been out on
bail, after being charged with a slough of criminal offenses surrounding the
firing of, and subsequent $8.4 million settlement of a lawsuit with, Gary Brown.
The Detroit
Free Press provides the following summary of the case: |
A Free
Press investigation of records shows that Detroit Mayor Kwame
Kilpatrick and chief of staff Christine Beatty lied about their
relationship during a high-profile whilstle-blower trial in summer
2007.
In a lawsuit against the City of Detroit, Kilpatrick's former
bodyguard Harold Nelthrope claimed his rights were violated when
people working for Kilpatrick released his name to the media as the
source of misconduct allegations against members of the mayor's
inner circle.
Fired Deputy Chief Gary Brown alleged he was fired for initiating a
police department investigation into Nelthrope's allegations.
Kilpatrick denied the allegations, but a Wayne County jury awarded
$6.5 million to the two former officers |
Following the jury's $6.5
million verdict — which would have been worth more than $8.5 million when
interest was added — Kilpatrick proposed that in lieu of filing an appeal, the
City pay $8.4 million to settle the various claims out of court.
Kilpatrick
cast the settlement as being for the benefit of all concerned:
Since the verdict, I’ve listened
to pastors, business leaders and so many Detroiters who genuinely
love and care about me and this city. I’ve humbly concluded
that a settlement … is the correct decision for my family and the
entire Detroit community. |
But
the real story appears to be, and the criminal charges arise out of, an affair
between Kilpatrick and his chief of Staff, Christine Beatty, and
lies and
coverups surrounding the affair and e-mails which they tried to keep secret.
Kilpatrick has been
charged
with: Conspiracy to Obstruct Justice and Obstruction of Justice, two charges of
Misconduct in Office (including engaging in the $8.4 million settlement as a
means of hiding e-mails which would have showed they llied under oath in the
civil suit), and four counts of perjury, arising out of testimony under oath in
the civil suit, and actions taken in the firing of Brown. Each of the
charges carries potential sentences of between five (5) and fifteen (15) years
in prison.
Those of us who live outside the Detroit sphere
of influence, cannot possibly appreciate the depth of the political depravity
and corruption that has become routine and run-of-the-mill since Kilpatrick and
his criminal enterprise took over in 2002 (and was re-elected by the city's
foolish electorate in 2006). (Debbie
Schlussel gives a great, quick overview of Detroit's "Pimp-Daddy" Mayor)
Kilpatrick will also likely be
charged with assault upon a Sheriff's employee, arising out of an incident
last month when the employee attempted to serve a subpoena upon the Mayor.
And so it goes, Detroit.
